Property and Evidence

The Police Department stores literally thousands of items ranging from evidence to found property. The Property Officer is accountable for each item and must be able to quickly locate every one of them.  Attempts are always made to determine the rightful owner of all found property, and to return it to its rightful owner whenever possible.  Found property is held for 90 days in accordance with State law.

If property remains unclaimed after case adjudication it is then destroyed, returned to the finder, or sent to auction.  The majority of found property consists of bicycles. At any given time, the Police Department has an average of 100 found bikes in storage.  Approximately twice a year all unclaimed property is sent to Ernst & Associates in Modesto for auction.  Auctions are held on a monthly basis. For auction information call: (209) 527-7399.

Evidence on the other hand is held until a case is adjudicated, or a court issues a Court Order authorizing the return of the property.  If the property is unclaimed it may be destroyed, utilized by the police department or sent to auction.

If you have lost a bike or other item, report it by calling the main Police Department telephone number at (925) 931-5100.  That way, if it is found we will be able to get it back to you.

Questions regarding the return of evidence or found property should be directed to the Property Clerk at (925) 931-5157.   Officer hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 am to 4pm.

Property is released by appointment only.
