The City of Pleasanton offers a special recreational program designed for people age 15 and above with developmental disabilities. The Recreational Activities for the Developmentally Disabled (RADD) Program promotes respect, self-expression and independence through a variety of carefully selected activities. Some of these activities include:
- Attending major league baseball basketball games;
- Having breakfast at local restaurants, followed by an activity (Bocce, Farmer’s Market visit or going to a movie);
- Swim parties at the City’s Aquatic Center;
- Having dinner at Downtown Pleasanton restaurants;
- Enjoying a take-out dinner and outdoor concert at Lion's Wayside Park during the summer months;
- Playing miniature golf and arcade games;
- Visiting interesting or educational places, such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Exploratorium, Pier 39, and Angel Island;
- Taking a Bay cruise or riding a train;
- Listening to special topics at the Pleasanton Library, followed by light snacks;
- Dances and the annual Winter Ball;
- Participating in karaoke nights;
- Attending performances, such as the Nutcracker Ballet.
Each activity is rated by exertion level to help the participant’s family/caretaker decide which activities are appropriate. 1 is low exertion (i.e., walking one block), while 10 is high exertion (i.e., walking 8 or more blocks).
There is one staff member assigned for every six participants. Participants requiring personal care assistance (such as going to the bathroom, eating, or special medical attention) must attend with a care provider.
Activities are announced in the City’s quarterly Activities Guide, and participants must register in advance for any activity. For the RADD registration form and instruction, click here and look for the RADD section.
The RADD Program also provides a quarterly newsletter, The RADD Rap, with information about registration deadlines, coming events, community resources, and pictures of participants at activities. To see the latest edition, click here for The RADD Rap link.
