The City has battery backup systems at approximately 60 intersections around town. During power outages, traffic signals equipped with these systems can continue to operate for an extended period of time, improving intersection operations and safety during power outages. With the incorporation of LED technology at the signals, battery backup systems are able to maintain full operation of the traffic signal during power outages instead of the typical flashing red.

Many of the City’s existing battery backup systems were installed approximately 10 years ago and are nearing the end of their useful lifetime. The multi year project will initially install new battery backup systems at locations without any backup system, then focus on upgrading and replacing the antiquated battery backup systems.
