Crosswalk Modification at West Las Positas Boulevard and Fairlands Drive

The City plans to improve pedestrian safety at West Las Positas Boulevard and Fairlands Drive by installing pedestrian actuated rectangular rapid flashing beacons.  These newly approved pedestrian safety beacon devices have a distinct "wig-wag" flashing pattern that have high (72% – 96%) vehicle yield rates.  These rates are similar to other pedestrian enhancements (in-pavement flashing lights and traditional flashing beacons) seen at other uncontrolled marked crossings in town.  Since this location has two marked crossings that serve the same pedestrian movement at this uncontrolled intersection, the project will install the beacons at the east crossing and remove the painted crosswalk striping for the west crossing (see diagram below).  The east crosswalk has the majority of the pedestrian traffic, better nighttime lighting and crosses fewer  travel lanes.  Concentrating the pedestrians to one crossing also makes pedestrian travel more predictable to motorists and should increase vehicles yielding and pedestrian safety.

The rectangular rapid flashing beacons will be installed on the right hand side of the roadway and also in the median as required under the current California Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.  These devices use solar powered LEDs activated by push buttons which will be installed on new poles on either side of the street.
