Microwave Pedestrian Detection

The City of Pleasanton has been working proactively to provide adequate crossing times at all of our signalized crosswalk locations.  The intersection of Sunol Boulevard and Mission Drive has numerous daily crossings and is the main pedestrian access point to the Pleasanton Senior Center.

This signal has already been programmed to give more crossing time than the state law required because it is used by a significant number of seniors that cross at varying speeds.  Even with the added crossing time, there are still a few pedestrians that would benefit from a little more time.  To account for this, the City has installed a pair of "SmartWalk" microwave detection devices.  The devices were installed at the south crosswalk on December 12, 2012.

This new technology is able to sense when pedestrians are still in the crosswalk and add additional time for the pedestrians to finish the crossing.   This ensures that every pedestrian, regardless of walking speed, will have sufficient time to cross the street.
