Managing the current and future transportation needs of the City of Pleasanton is no small task. We are always striving to increase the efficiency and safety of our transportation network. One challenge is to balance the needs of the different modes of transportation: walking, biking, and driving. Designing a roadway or facility to accommodate all three modes requires a team of professionals to conduct the data collection and analysis that ultimately lead to a final decision.

Provide traffic and transportation engineering designs in coordination with the Engineering Division of the Community Development Department on projects relating to the City’s transportation network. These include street improvements, bikeways, traffic safety improvements, traffic markings and signs, street lights, traffic signals, mass transit, and railroads.
- Conduct traffic counts, engineering studies, accident studies, and speed studies.
- Review studies and traffic modeling prepared by consulting engineers in support of public and private development.
- Review proposed land developments for traffic and transportation impacts, including plan checking, traffic control measures, traffic impact analysis, street lighting, and traffic signals.
- Coordinate and plan with other local and regional transportation agencies on projects that may impact our local traffic (either positively or negatively).
- Conduct traffic, street and roadway projects funded as part of the Capital Improvement Program and annual department budget. Click here for a list of our annual, bi-annual and special projects. Click here for information on the Capital Improvement Program and all funded projects.
- Manage the City of Pleasanton Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program (NTCP). Traffic calming is a way to manage traffic so that its negative impacts on residents, pedestrians and schools are minimized. Traffic calming solutions can range from the installation of a radar speed sign near an elementary school to the installation of speed lumps to slow traffic. - Prepare and implement the Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan. The goal of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan is to make Pleasanton a city where walking and biking are a viable alternative to the automobile, for work, school, and recreational trips. taff Traffic Committee:
Our Staff Traffic Committee meets once a month and is comprised of representatives from Traffic Engineering, Streets, Economic Development, Pleasanton Unified School District and Police Department. Having representatives from departments ranging from the planning of projects to enforcement provides the opportunity for great discussions and innovative solutions for current traffic concerns. This meeting is also open to the public. Items are brought to this committee for discussion by any of the departments represented or any public that is present. Most items that Traffic Engineering brings to the committee were originally brought to us by residents. For a meeting schedule, please call 925-931-5650.
