Spare the Air is a voluntary air pollution campaign in the Bay Area and is sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Spare the Air days are called when the possibility arises that we will exceed federal standards for healthy air. The City of Pleasanton is part of the Spare the Air Employer Network which informs their workforce of impending Spare the Air days, educates employees about the ways individuals can improve air quality, and motivates them to take action. We are notified through an e-mail notification system by 1pm the day before a Spare the Air day is forecasted. To sign up for e-mail notification, go to www.sparetheair.org. Spare the Air in the summertime begins in early June and runs until early October.

Wintertime Spare the Air Program - The coldest weeks of the year when the Bay Area normally experiences excesses of federal PM10 and PM2.5 standards has come to an end with a clean record. Fine particulate pollution tends to spike on cold evenings during the holidays when many households are prone burning wood in the fireplace. Weekends around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years typically pose the threat of some of the worst air quality we see over the course of any year. The past round of holidays have fallen at times when we have also experienced strong moving weather fronts that bring rain and even more importantly, great volumes of clean air off the ocean.
