Helping Our Commercial Irrigation Customers Save Money

There are approximately 890 irrigation meters in the City of Pleasanton. Approximately 230 of these irrigation meters belong to the City and are used for parks, street medians, and public building landscaping. The remaining meters serve approximately 350 water irrigation customers, with some customers owning multiple meters.

The total annual water consumption from all 890 irrigation meters represents approximately 30% of the City’s total annual water demand. During the peak summer months, these meters account for approximately 35% of the City’s total water consumption, which is a significant percentage of the City’s overall water consumption.

Water Budget Analysis

The City performed a detailed water budget analysis over four summers in the late 1990s. This study looked at how much water was actually being used by irrigation customers, and compared those values to the amount of water that was actually necessary to sustain landscaping based on weather station data. The results showed that on average, irrigation customers consumed 90% more water than necessary – almost DOUBLE the amount of water required!

Translate this percentage into how much water was theoretically wasted: 86 million gallons – the equivalent of 130 Olympic sized swimming pools! Yielding a potential savings to these customers of close to $175,000! – It pays to invest in a technologically advanced irrigation system, as well as checking to ensure your landscaper is a certified irrigation contractor.
